GSA’s Move to the Cloud Generates Thunderclap of News Coverage

There’s good reason why the announcement that Unisys will migrate the U.S. GSA to Google Apps for Government, and create a secure, cloud-based e-mail and collaboration platform, has generated so much positive reaction in the media.

It’s the first federal agency to make the move to the cloud. Moreover, GSA’s analysis that its migration will cut related costs by 50 percent over the next five years is a validation of the cloud’s benefits for believers in cloud computing.

Additionally, the fact that Google Apps for Government is the first suite of e-mail and cloud computing apps to receive FISMA certification shows that the Google solution meets federal government security requirements.

In the context of consumerization, this contract illustrates what we’ve been talking about on this blog since it launched: That the nature of enterprise IT is changing, driven by technologies first established in the consumer arena. These consumer technologies are reshaping not only how we use software, but also the productivity and cost-saving benefits that we can achieve.

Here’s a selection of some of the coverage.

Unisys Awarded Contract to Provide Cost-Saving E-Mail and Collaboration Platform, based on Google Apps for Government, for U.S. General Services Administration

Cloud-based solution designed to enhance GSA employee collaboration and productivity while reducing administrative costs

BLUE BELL, Pa., — December 2, 2010 — The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has awarded a contract to Unisys (NYSE: UIS) to create a secure cloud-based email and collaboration platform, based on Google Apps for Government, to allow GSA employees to collaborate and work remotely from any location at any time.

According to GSA, the migration will result in a 50 percent savings over the next five years when compared to current staff, infrastructure, and contract support costs.

The five-year, firm fixed price task order was a competitive award to Unisys via GSA’s Alliant contract. Unisys will provide transition, data migration, training and cloud based software as a service for the new environment.

The award will provide up to 17,000 GSA employees and contractors worldwide with enhanced collaboration services, including email with expanded storage, as well as full access to Google Apps collaboration tools. The cloud-based solution includes applications such as Google Gmail; Google Calendar, Google Docs and Google Sites.

“We applaud GSA for boldly embracing the benefits of cloud computing to improve communications and collaboration across their diverse organization,” said Ted Davies, president of Unisys Federal Systems. “We are excited to partner with our longstanding GSA customer to more effectively deliver their mission supporting other agencies and the U.S. citizens at a lower cost to the taxpayer.”

The Unisys team also includes Tempus Nova, Inc. and Acumen Solutions.
